Stalking Maui Mongooses (or Mongeese?)

Mongoose (not a ferret) at Makena State Park

I've been wanting to take a picture of a mongoose for a while, but they move quickly and furtively, zooming across the road like they are being chased by Wile E. Coyote.  Mongooses are another colossal failure: an introduced species to deal with rats, but rats are nocturnal and mongooses are diurnal. Mongooses also eat eggs of endangered birds as well as chicken eggs, to the chagrin of most farmers.  But they are entertaining to watch. Anyhow, the technical plural of mongoose is not mongeese but mongooses. Who'dda thunk it?
