An upcountry Maui moment: watching pineapple pickers in the field.
On the way to the Hali'imaile Community Garden the other week, I couldn't resist stopping by the road to see the pineapple machinery in action. I guess it's not as exciting as Jaws, which went off yesterday, but it's still not a sight I see every day, especially so close to the road.

Pineapple picking is not really that romantic. It's backbreaking work in the hot sun. One classmate from high school picked pineapples one summer and could not stand pineapples after that. I also wanted to get a summer job picking pineapples when I was 16, and my mother put her foot down. In retrospect, I don't know if it was a good thing or not - I would have had first hand experience doing field labor but probably would have hated it too - all the physical work and getting poked by pointy pineapple leaves.
Here's a short clip of pineapple picking, complete with road noise and shaky video camera movements:

I love this road - it offers great panoramic views.
